In October 1922 South Place Ethical Society purchased a site in Red Lion Square, Holborn, in order to build a new headquarters, having outgrown its original chapel in Finsbury. In 1925 the Society acquired the freehold of 51 Theobalds Road, in order to provide a second exit from the Red Lion Square building, as required by London County Council.
